The following is the first answer stated for using pour or de to give thanks for something tangible.
"To express thank you for + [noun], you can use EITHER merci de or merci pour + [nom], although:"
Then, almost as an after thought it states specifics on when to ACTUALLY use pour or de to give thanks for abstract, THEN physical or tangible nouns.
No wonder I got this wrong. PLEASE CLARIFY THIS IN A STRAIGHTFORWORD WAY, so other don't make the same I made over and over before reading the fine print. Thank you. I didn't write it in French so I wouldn't mess up again. :o)
