There are 'clues', but basically noun gender has to be learnt as you encounter the words, because for almost every noun ending, there are exceptions to the 'common' pattern. See attached lesson and 'external' link.
( Nouns ending in " -isme " are all masculine, the only ending that is 100% exclusive to one grammatical gender).
