Paraître is to appear as in to seem to be , apparaître is a physical manifestation, to become visible -

Cet exercise me paraît difficile = This exercise seems difficult to me

Cet erreur apparaît sur plusieurs documents = This error appears in several documents

I suggest a good online dictionary such as Larousse or PONS or any other of the many choices Google throws up when you enter "paraitre English", for example.
