Paul should have left earlier - Paul aurait du partir

How would you say - Paul should have had to leave earlier - is that the 2e form, il eut du?

Bonjour Chris,

In French, it would be -

il aurait dû devoir partir plus tôt

But I must admit that it sounds really odd, both in English and French, and I cannot see in which limited situation you would use that.

I think I would say something like -

Il aurait fallu qu'on l'oblige à partir plus tôt

which in English would be

He should have been made to leave earlier

Any other comments from our regular contributors on this Forum about this matter would be useful

Cécile,

your response and alternative suggestions are exactly as I thought on reading the question from Chris, both in regard to the English and the French.
