Position of adverbs

... et maintenant il désespérait de jamais la revoir !

In the above sentence, can I place 'jamais' before the preposition 'de'?

Il avait rencontré cette jeune Française dont il était tombé éperdument amoureux.

In this sentence, why is the adverb 'éperdument' after the participle?

Bonjour Blaise,

- "il désespérait jamais de la revoir" is not possible. The adverb jamais is associated with the verb "revoir" and you cannot separate "désespérer" from the preposition "de" as it is part of the verbal expression: désespérer de [faire].

- "il était tombé éperdument amoureux""éperdument" is placed before the adjective "amoureux" because the adverb is modifying "amoureux" and placing "éperdument" before "tombé" would emphasise the act of falling in love rather than the state of being madly in love.

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !
