To clear the table is not Desservir, but Débarrasser.

The French would never use the verb Desservir to mean to clear (the table).
Instead, they would use Débarrasser, as in « Débarrasse la table, s’il te plaît. »

Maarten is right that "desservir" is rather formal in the context of clearing a table. I know I don't use it in French in that context. You will hear it in other contexts though, such as talking about which place a train stops at. Thanks to you, we will update the examples.

both words are correct in the context, and both are in use in everyday modern French.

Desservir may be considered a bit more formal, so you may not hear it quite as commonly in everyday speech, but it is quite correct as used in the example sentence in the lesson and with the definition given.
