When to use i and not e in essuyer

I am struggling to see why you have suggested one can use i or y but when I use the y in the answer of the verb, it is wrong.

Bonjour Lisa,

Usually, you should only use -i - however the nous and vous forms always take "y". But you can also use -y with verbs in -ayer only as per the lesson content explains.

payer (= to pay): je paie / je paye

nettoyer (= to clean): je nettoie

essuyer (= to wipe): j'essuie

Take a look here: nettoie vs nettoye

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !

Bonjour Jennifer,

The lesson is consistent with my answer: only verbs in -ayer can have 2 verb endings (one with -i and one with -y). In your comment, you mention the verb ESSUYER (to wipe) which has a different verb ending (-uyer not -ayer):

ESSAYER (to try) -> j'essaie / j'essaye

PAYER (to pay) -> je paie / je paye

I hope this is helpful.

Bonne journée !

I did it the same way as Lisa M.

As per Lisa M:    The lesson seems consistent with Céline's answer: it gives specific example showing  Il essaye to be interchangeable with Il essaie. Yet in quiz marked Il essuyer as incorrect rather than an option.

Your bot is not letting me change my typo! I want to clarify that I mean "The lesson seems INCONSISTENT with Céline's answer".
