I am struggling to see why you have suggested one can use i or y but when I use the y in the answer of the verb, it is wrong.

When to use i and not e in essuyer
This question relates to:French lesson "Conjugate semi-regular -oyer/-ayer/-uyer verbs in the present tense in French (Le Présent)"
Asked 3 hours ago
Bonjour Lisa,
Usually, you should only use -i - however the nous and vous forms always take "y". But you can also use -y with verbs in -ayer only as per the lesson content explains.
payer (= to pay): je paie / je paye
nettoyer (= to clean): je nettoie
essuyer (= to wipe): j'essuie
Take a look here: nettoie vs nettoye
I hope this is helpful.
Bonne journée !
