Why is there a ‘y’ in this sentence?

Il ne joue pas souvent au foot, et toi ? -Je n'y joue pas souvent non plus.

I don’t play often either.

This is one of the examples above.

Hi Jocelyn,

The expression is 'jouer à'..., the y replaces 'au foot'.
