why the singular pouce here and not the plural pouces, as they each have a thumb/pouce and not a mutual thumb, which they all would be sucking?

I won't again write "jeudi suivant" in quiz answers but I hear it a lot when making plans, so I'm putting this here :-)

Ma mère est bien.  Mais je crois que mon père est généralement mieux que ma mère, parce qu’il a une bonne disposition.  

Vous nagez très bien.  En fait, je pense que vous nagez peut-être mieux que tous les autres.  Vous nagez le mieux, il n’y a aucune question à propos de ça.

Is it the difference in just passively "seeing" something and actively "noticing" or what else??
