English translations needing clarification (perhaps)

Bonjour,

I was noticing in the lesson that the contruction in the French is dealing with the past, but many of the English translations are in the present (ex: I was congratulated for coming.). Should the translations also reflect the past? (ex: I was congratulated for having come.) I guess the difference is that it's hard to know what to do with on reverse translation on a quiz. If you see "He was promoted for going to the seminar" it's hard to know whether to write "pour aller au seminaire" or whether to write "pour etre alle au seminaire." Maybe the "was promoted" has to be the key?

remerciement à Aurélie

Je veux simplement remercier Aurélie pour vos lessons superbes et commenter que ma mère, Marcelle Eudes a quitté Le Havre en 1936 pour étudier l'anglais à l'université de Southampton et elle aussi a resté en Angleterre (à part les années de la guerre où elle est retournée au Havre jusqu'à la fin du bombardement) pendent toute sa vie jusqu'à 93 ans. Elle aurait eu 100 ans cette année. C'était toujours vers maman que nous avons dirigé nos questions concernant la grammaire soit en français soit en anglais! Merci à vous brillantes enseignantes! Sometimes the "t" of "est" is pronounced and sometimes it isn't. Can we choose whether to liaise or not when using this phrase?

Manquer de + human attrbute ? To lack a human attrubute ?

I think what I'm about to ask is not possible with manquer de + thing, and I would like to confirm I am correct. Am I correct it is NOT possible to use manquer de + human attribute ?

Examples

I lack your warmth (in the emotional sense). Je manque de ton chaleur.

I lack your humour. Je manque de ton humour.

I have been told this doesn't really work in French, and I would be better off using avoir.

e.g Je n'ai pas ton chaleur. Je n'ai pas ton humour.

Any comments appreciated.
