Are these are examples of ne explétif Hello, I have started reading L'etranger by Albert Camus recently. I see the following two sentences with the use of ne and no other negative words (like "pas" or "rien", etc). Are they examples of Ne Explétif", or is there another explanation? 1. "Puis il m’a serré la main qu’il a gardée si long- temps que je ne savais trop comment la retirer." 2. "Vous ne pouviez subvenir à ses besoins." Merci beaucoup en avance!

''Eva se fait laver les cheveux.'' means Eva is having her hair done?Am I correct in thinking that Eva se fait laver les cheveux means she is having her hair washed as well as she has her hair done? I am slightly thrown because has her hair done looks like a past perfect construction but se fait laver like a present.

Today's insightA way to simplify things is to think of short phrases as if they were single words. "il y a" is an obvious example. With "j'ai" as a single word, one does not have to think about the rule were the terminating vowel of a word must be replaced with an apostrophe when the next word begins with a vowel. And with "ce qui est", one does not need to think about the rules about when to use "ce que" vs "ce qui".

En with masculine regions"Reasons of pronunciation" is pretty vague. What masculine regions other than Ontario may use 'en'?

hello,

i know the verb écouter takes a direct object and in the example above (Je n'écoute jamais le prof) it's rather obvious. in another lesson however, there's an example like (tu n'écoutes jamais Alice).. my question is: how can i tell the meaning of the sentence, i mean when i read the example i thought someone is saying to Alice that she never listens, not the actual meaning of someone is saying to another that he\she never listens to Alice!

Gender agreement with "un pair de chaussures"

J'ai acheté deux paires de chaussures, mais ________ me va.

I wrote "ni l'un ni l'autre ne", but it was rejected. It says it's "ni l'une ni l'autre ne". Now, I understand we're talking about PAIRS of shoes, not just shoes, and "un pair" is masculine. So is this an error?
