What am I missing???"The day before, I had written him a letter." Now, of course I can translate this safely as "La veille, ...". However, why not as "Le jour précédant,..."? After all, it stands on its own, or doesn't it? -- Chris.

If Je becomes j' with verbs beginning with a vowel..

Then how come an example is ‘J’habite à Londres?’

I have been taught that parler à someone is an exception on word order and it is correct to say Je parle à lui. This is stated as incorrect in yours

Rien que d'y penser

Lots of interesting idioms in this exercise like - "rien que d'y penser" and "sans que j'y puisse quoi que ce soit".

I'm trying to break down "rien que d'y penser" into English. Rien que = nothing that or nothing but. De = I'm just starting to recognize that "de" often comes after "que" in certain phrases (Je dors plutot que de travailler). Y penser = to think about it.

I still don't see how sans que j'y puisse means I can't or I am not able. What does "y" refer to?

Elles sont à 2,35€ le kilo.I noticed in one of the writing tests "They cost..." one translation is given as "Elles sont à..." or "they are at..." Is the à after être required when talking about prices and measures in French, or is it optional? ~Thanks for your help.
