French Indefinite Pronoun
See also: Pronom and Pronoun Types
Indefinite pronouns refer to people or things without saying exactly who or what they are. They are vague or "not definite" because they do not refer to any specific person, thing or amount. Because they are pronouns, they stand alone; they do not accompany a noun like indefinite adjectives do.
French indefinite pronouns:
tout | everything |
tout le monde/tous | everyone/everybody |
plusieurs | several |
chacun | each person |
quelqu'un | someone/somebody |
quelque chose | something |
un/une autre | another one |
d'autres | others |
personne | no one/nobody |
rien | nothing |
Variable indefinite pronouns must agree in number and gender with the nouns that they replace:
chacun/chacune, quelques-uns/quelques-unes, un/une autre, d'autres
Invariable indefinite pronouns do not change:
personne, rien, quelque chose, quelqu'un
