doesn't belle-mère and beau-père also mean mother-in-law and father-in-law? I've never heard of them being the step-parents

Inserting a seemingly unneccessary definite articleIn a similar vein to my question below ( I don't know where to find the relevant grammar topic ), there are many places in french where it seems one must insert a definite article where it would be omitted in English-- here are a couple of examples: "Il y a même des alcools spéciaux en France qui sont synonymes de l'apéritif comme le Pineau, le Muscadet que l’on sert avec une liqueur de fruit. " "Vous serrez la main que l'on vous tend." Why can't you say "qu'on sert"," qu'on vous tend" ?

Encore vs ToujoursDear Aurelie, Why is "you must still know" "Il faut encore connaitre" and not "Il faut toujours connaitre" ? I thought that toujours worked better for still. could toujours be used? Thank you, Leah

Two questions about Tu and VousIf there's a case that my teacher (or teacher's assistent) is somewhere near my age or we have known each other for a while (usually educators want to be as quick as possible to befriend students during class, so that would be approximately two weeks), should I address them in Tu or Vous? Another case is that what if I've chatted with a person whom I've just met for an hour and after a while I text that person in Tu, would I sound repelling? Merci beaucoup in advance!

Commencer à does not work

Bonjour !

I have been told by French people that I cannot apply this rule to the verb commencer à.

For example:

Je commence à faire mes devoirs. J'y commence.

I am starting to do my homework. I'm starting it.

Is it an exception ? Or is it just socially not regularly used ?
