Ce sont vs Elles sontJ'utilise ces tomates. ________ les dernières

I believe that "Elles sont" should be used here because we are talking about specific tomatoes. Yet "Ce sont" is correct here - why?

passé composé or imparfait?

Bonjour!

How best to translate this sentence please? : "Were you there before?" - Etais-tu là avant? (or) As-tu été là avant?

and the same sentence in the negative: "Weren't you there before?" - N'étais-tu pas là avant? (or) N'as-tu pas été là avant?

For "our parents" (ie. it is my brother and my parents), why do we say "nos parents" instead of "notre parents" since it is the same parents?

I may have found a problem....Last week Anthony gave us a box of chocolates. Conjugate "offrir" (to give) in the passé composé. The selections to choose from read as follow....a offert, offrit, offrait and est offert... Where is the correct selection, which I believe is Nous avons offert??? Assistance.... s'il vous plaît Merci

Why is this incorrectI put Je suis dix minutes en retard i.e. Être plus en, not Avoir plus de. It was marked wrong. .....?

Referring to http://www.french-linguistics.co.uk/grammar/avoir_or_etre.shtml can yo clarify "In other cases, particularly when the subject is a person, être is used:" e.g. he went up to the third floor. Is this different to your example above 'you went up the stairs silently"

‘ne pas + infinitif’

Could someone kindly elaborate on the grammatical structure behind instances when ‘ne’ and ‘pas’ occur side-by-side, like ‘Tu peux ne pas venir’ and ‘Prière de ne pas déranger’ please?
