French language Q&A Forum

I have come across the following sentence in a novel that I’m reading: ‘On avait laissé dans un coin une applique allumée, parce que la lumière des bougies eût été insuffisante.’ I would like to know why the subjunctive is being used here, because I have always been told that parce que is followed by the indicative. The novel in question dates from the late 1940s, so it’s not a very archaic usage.

What? We'd agreed to see each other next Saturday!

Hein? On était convenus de se voir samedi prochain !

Why isn't était d'accord an option?

she would always bring three or four big novels with her.

elle emportait toujours trois ou quatre gros romans avec elle.

I thought emporter was to take something and apporter was to bring something?

I thought that to use the j’ that the silent “h” would be eliminated and if the “h” is not eliminated then it’s Je smh🤦🏽‍♀️

Why 'rôdaient'  in 3'd p plural ? Doesn't rôder refer to "le bruit" in singular, not ´les âmes’?

I wrote mon délicieux 'gratin dauphinois'. why was it marked incorrect?

Quizbot marked it wrong when I responded, “mais elle est meilleur maintenant”.  QB said “va meilleur”.  But the English doesn’t say she _feels_ better, it says she _is_ better.  That takes a form of “aller” according to the lesson.

“Le violet” is a specific item.  Shouldn’t it take “Elle” as a pronoun in “It’s very pretty”?
