How do you know whether to use "depuis" or "il y a" to express a period of time. These lessons have had "J'habite à Paris depuis cinq ans" and also "J'ai mangé il y a un heure"
Les jambes, elles, étaient vêtues de collants de danseuse, blancs scintillants, que chaussaient de délicats talons hauts, noirs et fins.
...are the high heels the subject and chaussaient the verb and they're inverted? And the "que" that precedes them is referring back to "les jambes?"
Hi all I used ( tandis que ) instead of pendant que, in the first line. and it marked it as an erreur. any explanation for that please?.thanks.
Why is the phrase "notre prof de science nous demandait de préparer ..." in imparfait not passé composé? Since the requests occurred at specific points in time I thought it would be passé composé. Is it because the requests were repeated each year?

Wouldn't it be correct to translate There is a door as either Voilà une porte or Il y a une porte ?
Like chris w I find this one difficult every time it comes round, due to the English translations given -
1. the English "certain" can carry either of the two meanings described here
2. "particular" also has several meanings, but it’s usually specific and not at all vague. Perhaps some more examples would help?
Why does "épaisse" go before the noun? Is "couche épaisse" incorrect?
In English there is a strong feeling to want to say “the period”. Below, the definite article is missing, so it’s just “période”. Is this just the way it is in French?
