My Childhood Memories in French in 15 sentences using Passe Compose and L'imparfait.

Memories are so precious and pure. Childhood memories are special for everyone. I have a lot of fond memories from my childhood and I love looking back on the good times. Even though, having grown up as a child, I had a fairly uneventful life. My parents were never really home. So I could basically do whatever I wanted to. Someone came to prepare the food. I usually came back at 4:30 p.m. and had lunch afterwards. I loved watching cartoons so much that I would stay up late at night just to watch cartoons. I always tried to study hard for my parents. My mom came back on weekends and my dad came once a month. I vividly remember going to dinner with my parents every time my dad came home. It was a time of celebration for all of us when a family got together and we were just happy in our own bubble. I will always cherish my childhood memories, forever.

There are lists of verbs that take à or de before an infinitive and commencer is on both lists. Can you explain when to use which construction? Thanks.

Please explain "Il lui (verbe)"Bonjour! I'm trying to improve my French through reading, and I've encountered a problem that I don't think was covered in my lessons. I keep seeing the following structure used in a sentence: "Il lui (verbe)." For example: "Il lui manque la montié d'une oreille et ses yeux sont... ." I unferstand this sentence to mean "He is missing half of an ear, and his eyes are... ." My problem is that I can't figure out why such sentences are using "Il lui (verbe)" instead of just "Il (verbe)." Another example is "Il lui arrive même de nous faire cadeau d'un rat." Could you please explain (1) is "lui" is being used as a stress pronoun in this case? And (2) why is it being used at all? Marci! -Duke

Use of ‘femme’ for both woman and wife

« ma femme préfère… » would ´mon épouse´ ever be used. Femme as both woman and wife sounds a bit old fashioned while a man gets to be ´homme and mari ‘

Translation of cookies

My dictionary gives 3 translations for cookie : biscuit, petite gâteau, and gâteau. I chose to use petit gâteau, which was marked incorrect. Since I can't see the cookie and don't really understand if there is a difference, perhaps according to shape or size, could someone elaborate on the nuances? I have gotten into trouble with this with my friend, who is a native French person, when I used biscuit for cookies that she prepared. Apparently, there is some disfunction unknown to me.
