Les étudiants ont été accueillis par le directeur 

Les étudiants étaient accueillis par le directeur. 

The latter translation is correct yet the C1 Test marked it worng?

Je sais que cette phrase est correct mais je ne sais pas pourquoi.  Selon mon connaisance de ce sujet AUQUEL est à + lequel. 

donc le verbe ici c'est une locution FAIRE PEUR. est-ce que la structure de ce verbe est faire peur à qqn? si non pourquoi il a utilisé auquel et pas lequel?

Are there any patterns to looks for in the verbs that are conjugated with è VS. the verbs conjugated with the (ll/tt) rule? If not, are there any tricks to memorize these select exceptions from the (ll/tt) rule? 

I can't seem to get these two lessons down because I have no rule for distinguishing between the verbs which have distinct conjugations. 

1. Jean- Pierre remarque la belle Mireille. Jean-Pierre

………remarque.

2. Mireille lève les yeux. Elle…….

lève.

3. Robert ne connaît pas Henri. Il ne………

connait pas.

4. Il n'ouvre pas cette porte. Il ne

……….ouvre pas.

5. Paul va fermer la fenêtre. Il va

……….fermer

So why is it that 1e, 2e, 3e, is only used for ranks / positions and never for dates.. (except 1st/ 1e i think?)

Why we use "va" instead of "vas"? I thought it was "vas" since they communicate with "Tu".

Is this tense more commonly used in French than in English? I hardly ever speak like this in English and I find it to be a strange tense to learn since it doesn't seem likely that we learners will be reminiscing in French. That seems to be it's only use.
