I'm a bit confused by what "on their own" means,especially when, in an example, "le jour suivant" isn't used on its own. I read the Q&A, and I'm still confused. Which sentence structures are correct for which phrases?

In the example: "Basile adore se coucher tard." Why isn't it 'tarde'?Isn't the object Basile feminine?

Ça or il"Oh! J'ai regardé ça aussi hier." How can we know it is not "Oh! Je le ai regardé aussi hier." (with contractions)? Last time I asked this you pointed me to the c'est vs il est lesson but "ce" is not "ça" so I don't see how that helps.

CinquièmeI think it would be useful to note in the lesson another small exception to the rule on forming the ordinal numbers. Namely, 'cinq' becomes 'cinquième' rather than 'cinqième'. No big deal, but I just wanted to mention it.

mangions and voyageons ... helpwhy does one use -ions and the other -eons, they're both -ger verbs.

Jack descended (on) the giant

I can see from the discussion that I am not the only learner who gets confused about this, but am I correct that these two sentences are translated thus:

Jack descended the giant = Jack a descendu le geant (Sorry, can't do the accent)

and

Jack descended on the giant = Jack est descendu sur le geant.
