Marraine m'avait prise dans ses bras
...why prise and not pris? Which rule would apply here?
I notice that the preferred translation of 'which makes him the first Frenchman to be in charge of the ISS' is 'ce qui fait de lui le premier Français en charge de la SSI' rather than 'ce qui en fait le premier ...'. All the grammar books I look at say that en can stand for 'de' plus a person - but I can see that in practice 'en fait' for 'makes him' is almost never said in French. Is it just too literary for this kind of phrase?
Why "s'illumine de lumieres colorees" and not "des lumieres colorees"?
I understand that "des" becomes "de" when the adjective precedes the noun that it is modifying, but in this case "colorees" is after "lumieres".
Confused by the use of "Lui" in "je LUI ai fait faire sa valise" and "je LUI ai même bandé les yeux" as they both don't use "à"? Or am I mistaken?
This distinction, as explained, is very tricky for me. I don't grasp the difference in meaning. Oh well....
Could I technically ask Qu'est-ce qu'il y a la distance entre Paris et Lyon? Would that make sense considering "il y a" can be used in questions.
Why is this not 'Je ne lui pensais guere' please?
