Apparaître either être or avoir

This lessons specifically states that:

To conjugate apparaître in Le Passé Composé (Indicatif), both auxiliaries avoir and être are perfectly valid and interchangeable while the meaning remains the same. In terms of usage, être is used more often than avoir in colloquial speech.

I've seen the comments below about one is used more for appearing, but why is mine wrong?

Would "au cours des années" be considered correct too? If not, what would be the difference between "au fil des ans/années" and "au cours des années" ?

2.     Elle vend des cahiers à Pierre et à moi.

English holidays are also plural!

"He's thinking of his holidays. He's thinking of it."

Can I suggest that "He's thinking of his holidays. He's thinking of them." would be better?

How can we check our translations by own self?

As we are doing translation practice here and we can check our mistakes here and correct it at a same time.....and if we have another document to translate and we do translation of that document at that time how would we know, it's right or wrong and if it's wrong then how can we correct it????

Is there any suggestion or any helpful method???

I always try to translate short stories from English to French but after completing it I get confused it's right or wrong..............
